When: April 17, 2015 9am-11:30am

Application has been submitted to the NASW-MO Chapter and is pending for approval of 2.5 Social Work clock hours. This program has been approved for 2.5 CEU clock hours for counselors.

Sponsored by Community Council of St. Charles County and Alternative Behavioral Care.
Workshop and CEU credit is free due to sponsorship by Alternative Behavioral Care.

Counselors and social workers who work directly with clients will, sooner or later, encounter suicidal individuals. They may also have the unfortunate experience of losing a client to suicide. Many suicides can be prevented; however, few mental health professionals have had any formal training to assist them in saving lives. Nor do most have an organized tool and methodology at their disposal to ensure that they do not "miss" identifying the at-risk individual. This program will seek to fill that knowledge gap and provide a risk assessment process by which mental health professionals will be able to be fully equipped to protect both themselves from liability and their clients from suicide.
Learning Objectives:
  • Identify key epidemiological factors related to suicide
  • Compare and contrast the concepts of predictability vs. foreseeability of suicide
  • Learn risk factors that render an individual at heightened risk of suicide
  • Learn how to incorporate a comprehensive risk assessment process with potentially suicidal clients
  • Learn how to document and verbalize the results of the risk assessment in order to make an accurate judgment of client risk and to protect the counselor/social worker from a legal standpoint
